Yesterday is but today’s memory,
and tomorrow is today’s dream. Khalil Gibran
When I was growing up one of my parent’s dreams was to take an adventure along the pacific coast of North America, from Vancouver along the coast and the famous highway 1 down to Los Angeles, to take in all its wonder and beauty. This was a dream that never came to fruition for them. My idea is to pay homage to them, and take them on the journey through my eyes, spirit and soul. With my mother passing almost 10 years ago, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, I also thought this would be a great way to raise some awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society and more importantly, research into such an awful disease. As we all know Alzheimer’s is an irreversible progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. Watching my mother’s decline was something I wish no one to experience. Having someone you love so much, so close to you with so many memories, not be able to recall those moments, or memories, and not even recognize you, or know who you are, is devastating, heartbreaking, and thinking of it brings tears to my eyes.
This summer in 2019 I will pursue this journey on a bicycle, riding from Vancouver Canada, along the pacific coast to Los Angeles California, with my mother and father on my shoulders in spirit, as I take them for the journey they dreamed of. This journey will also allow me to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. They say you are a direct product of your upbringing and you model your parents. This can’t be truer for myself. My father was fairly active and fit, and lived very adventurously. My mother, was the philanthropist, always helping others and volunteering. She volunteered many years for the Alzheimer’s Society to raise funds and awareness through events and other fundraising activities. Here I am about to embark on this adventurous journey, taking after my dad, and using it to raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause, reminiscent of my mother.
I’m sure most of us have witnessed this disease in some way or another. As I embark on this journey I ask that we all band together to make a difference, and see if we can’t eradicate this horrible disease.
