Welcome to my Participant Page!
Thank you for supporting me in raising awareness and funds that will make a difference in the lives of people living with dementia, their caregivers and families.
I have a few different personal connections with Alzheimer's disease, as it has been one of distress and sadness as well as opportunity and enrichment. Let me explain...
Recently I turned a chapter in my life and took on a new career as a Recreation Therapist. I am trained in helping people develop and enrich their wellbeing through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure pursuits that positively challenge them cognitively, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I get to help people find joy through play! My training exposed me to working with elders and their families diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia in both a hospital setting and community programs. What an eye opening and rewarding experience! I have witnessed the immense stress of change and transition, feelings of loss and nostalgia that partners, caregivers, familiies and friends experience over the excrutiating degeneration that Alzheimer's inevitably brings. Yet I have learned to see the person before the disease, to find laughter and delight with people at all levels of awareness, to appreciate the nuggets of humaness that shine through the shade of Alzheimer's.
But I not only see Alzheimer's in my patients, but also in my own family. My father, Dr. Richard Berry, is living with Alzheimer's disease. There really are no words that can describe the amount of love and admiration that I have for my dad, and to witness the changes he must face with this disease is heartbreaking. At the same time, I know that there is a rich and vibrant life for my dad over the years ahead, made possible through engagement with loved ones, active living, and appropriate settings and community. With humour, hope and open hearts, my dad's experience with Alzheimer's can still be a life worth living.
I’m participating in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Lindsay, ON on Sunday, May 31st to help raise money on behalf of the Alzheimer Society, so they can meet the growing demand for programs and services. These and other resources make all the difference in the way that people affected by dementia are able to manage the disease and live life to the fullest.
